Heatwaves affect entire regions, but dense urban areas can become especially dangerous. Dark roads and roofs absorb heat, tall buildings may block airflow, and some neighbourhoods have little shade. Urban planner Sofia Marin joins us today. Sofia, why is general advice not enough?
Because residents do not all face the same conditions. Someone in a cool, well-insulated home can respond more easily than a person living on the top floor of an old building.
Who needs the most support?
Outdoor workers, older people, young children and people with certain health conditions may face greater risks. A strong plan identifies these groups and reaches them before the hottest days arrive.
What can a city do immediately?
Libraries and community buildings can become cooling centres. Cities can also extend swimming-pool hours and organise phone networks to check on isolated residents.
Opening a building sounds simple. What can go wrong?
A cooling centre is ineffective if people cannot reach it, do not know it exists or are worried about leaving a pet at home. Transport, opening times and communication have to work together.
What about changes that reduce the heat itself?
Trees provide shade and cool the air, while lighter roofs reflect more sunlight. Shaded bus stops, drinking-water points and renovated housing can also make daily life safer.
Are trees a quick solution?
Not always. Young trees need water and care, and planners must choose species that can survive future conditions. Planting without long-term maintenance will not deliver the promised shade.
Cities now collect detailed temperature data. Is that enough to decide where money should go?
No. Data can reveal which streets remain hottest at night, but it should be combined with local knowledge. Residents may know that a square has no shade at school collection time or that a lift often breaks in a high-rise building.
You also describe heat planning as an issue of fairness. Why?
Wealthier households can often buy air conditioning or leave the city. Public policy has to protect people with fewer choices without increasing energy costs or emissions.
If there is no single solution, what makes a plan effective?
The best approach connects emergency support, healthier buildings, greener streets and clear communication. No single intervention can solve urban heat, so those measures have to reinforce one another.
