Have you ever told yourself, “I’m just going to watch one episode,” and then suddenly realised that it’s two o’clock in the morning? If that has happened to you, you are definitely not alone.

Today, I’m going to talk about why some TV series become so difficult to stop watching.

One important reason is something called a cliffhanger. A cliffhanger is a situation at the end of an episode when something important happens, but we don’t find out what happens next. For example, imagine that the main character opens a mysterious door, and the episode ends before we can see what is inside. Of course, we want to know what happens, so we immediately start the next episode.

Streaming platforms understand this very well. Many of them release entire seasons at the same time, instead of making us wait one week for each episode. This means that viewers can watch three, four or even ten episodes in a single day. In English, people often call this binge-watching.

But there is another reason why we become attached to certain series: the characters. When we spend several hours watching the same people, we start to feel that we know them. We become happy when they succeed, sad when something bad happens to them, and sometimes even angry with their decisions.

This is one reason why people love discussing TV shows online. After watching an episode, viewers can go to social media and share theories about what might happen next. Some fans even create videos explaining small details that other viewers missed.

There is also a commercial side to all of this. Popular series can make actors extremely famous. They can also create new trends. A character’s clothes, hairstyle or even a sentence from a show can suddenly become popular. Sometimes people buy products simply because they have seen them in a series.

However, there is one problem with all this entertainment: spoilers. A spoiler is information about an important part of a film or series that someone tells you before you have watched it.

For many fans, spoilers are a serious problem. Imagine spending months waiting for the new season of your favourite show, only to open Instagram and discover the ending in a video or comment. Some people even avoid social media completely until they have watched the latest episode.

So, the next time you say, “I’ll just watch one more episode,” remember that the writers may have planned that cliffhanger very carefully. And if you do continue watching until three in the morning… well, at least you know you’re not the only one!
