A Library for Things, Not Only Books
Discover a library where people borrow tools and household items. Practise A2 reading, useful vocabulary and everyday sustainability.
The new library in Milltown has books, but it also has many other things. People can borrow a tent, a sewing machine or a cake tin. This service is called a Library of Things. It helps people use useful objects without buying them.
Members pay a small yearly fee. They choose an item online and keep it for one or two days. When they collect it, a volunteer checks their membership card and explains how to use the item safely. Some popular items have a waiting list at weekends.
Sara borrowed a carpet cleaner after her dog ran into the house with muddy feet. The cleaner was heavy, but the library had a trolley she could use.
The project also runs short repair classes. Local people learn how to fix lamps, clothes and simple furniture. Broken items are not always thrown away. The library saves money for its members and creates less waste. It also brings neighbours together because volunteers share their skills.
